The ChiComs are building a new base on islands near the scene of a growing territorial dispute with Japan. The Nanji islands are about 60 miles closer to the disputed Senkaku Islands than Okinawa, a major base for both Japan and the United States.

Defense Cuts Hit Airlifters

Two squadrons of the Air Force’s most modern transport plane will be deactivated over the next two years. The cuts were announced on 22 December.

According to an Air Force News Service report, the 17th and 10th Airlift Squadrons will be deactivated in 2015 and 2016, respectively. The 17th is attached to the 437th Airlift Wing, while the 10th is assigned to the 62nd Airlift Wing. Both wings will go down from four squadrons to three. The 16 aircraft will be assigned to a backup status that will save $110 million a year.
