Beyond ARGO: Eagle Claw and PYRONOL

by Paul Evancoe

On November 4, 1979, a group of between 300 to 500 Islamist militants and students took over the American embassy in Tehran as a show of support for the Iranian Revolution. During this early morning non-violent attack, they took 52 American diplomats and embassy staff hostage. After several failed attempts to negotiate their release over the following several months, President Jimmy Carter authorized the planning for a secret military rescue mission, code named Operation Eagle Claw.

Detailed intelligence of the embassy’s precise physical condition and whereabouts of the 52 American hostages was essential. Working in deep cover and posing as European businessmen, a small, elite team of American servicemen, who were all fluent Farsi speakers, infiltrated Tehran. Their task was to surveil the American embassy, gather detailed human intelligence on the ingress and egress routes to and from the embassy and potential landing zones, and rent and pre-stage vehicles at key locations in preparation of the rescue.

Texas, Florida the New Battlegrounds
By SOF

In the wake of a shooting at Florida State University, as is often the case after such events, there has been a push for a new gun law. This time, though, the law being pushed for not only might have made a difference, it is pro-Second Amendment.

According to a report by the Washington Free Beacon, Students for Concealed Carry are pushing for legislation to overturn gun bans on college campuses. The push gained new momentum after a recent shooting at Florida State, where three people were shot by a gunman who was later killed by responding police officers.

ONE STORM EQUALS 100 MILLION AMERICANS WITHOUT POWER?

The “Space Weather” Threat
By SOF

Over a third of the American people could lose electric power – and the blackout could last for months or more. That is the frightening warning from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, part of the Department of Homeland Security.

According to a report by the Washington Free Beacon, that sort of outage is very possible should the United States be hit by a space weather phenomenon known as a solar storm, as it was in 1859 and 1921. Those two storms had minimal effect due to the fact that electricity was not as widespread then as it is now.

WILL NUKES RETURN TO EUROPE?

Deployment Considered In Light of Russian Cheating
By SOF

Could American nuclear missiles be returning to Europe? That possibility is very distinct in light of revelations that Russia has been cheating on the 1987 Intermediate Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty.

According to a report by the Washington Free Beacon, the Department of Defense is considering re-deploying ground-launched cruise missiles to NATO should the Russians fail to comply with the INF Treaty. In accordance with that treaty, the United States dismantled MGM-31C Pershing II ballistic missiles and BGM-109G Gryphon cruise missiles.

Benghazi Congressional Investigations Roll On, Barely

By Roger Aronoff
Accuracy in Media

The latest hearing by the House Select Committee on Benghazi was held on December 10th, as Congress is about to head out the door for Christmas. The hearing was unfortunately still focused on the far-from-independent State Department Accountability Review Board. It’s time to move on. There is plenty to investigate. The critics of any further investigation are citing the latest report from Rep. Mike Rogers’ (R-MI) House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI) to argue that the whole investigation should be shut down.

That’s the narrative previously promoted by Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD), who also referred to the flawed HPSCI report’s assertion that it is a “definitive” accounting in his opening statement at Wednesday’s hearing..

ON THE BRINK, ONE CLOSE CALL WITH SUICIDE, A VET's HAUNTING STORY

A Vet’s Story

Stephen Carlson had kept a gun with him for the nearly two weeks he had been on leave from a tour in Afghanistan in 2009. He swigged from a bottle of bourbon and chain-smoked. Finally, he put his 45-caliber pistol in his mouth.

“I remember how the Rem-Oil tasted, and thinking about how quick it would be. The hollow-point bullet in the chamber would explosively blow out my brain stem and that would be that,” he wrote at taskandpurpose.com. However, he didn’t go through with it.
