Letter from NRA Institute for Legislative Action Executive Director Chris Cox to the United States Senate On Background Checks

Dear Senator,

I am writing regarding the National Rifle Association’s position on several firearms-related proposals under consideration in the Senate.

FILIBUSTER FAILS

Sixteen Republicans Go Soft
By Harold Hutchison

The United States Senate moved on to debate a gun bill that would impose wide-ranging background checks on all gun purchases. This comes as the NRA announced that it would “score” the votes on some of the amendments that will come up.

The Senate vote to end a filibuster lead by Rand Paul on the motion to proceed was 68-31, with sixteen Republicans voting to move the bill to the floor of the United States Senate, while Democrats Mark Pryor and Mark Begich, both facing tough re-election races, voted to sustain the filibuster.

ARE CHRISTIAN ORGANIZATIONS HATE GROUPS?

Army Officer Labels FRC, AFA in E-mail
By Harold Hutchison

Christian groups like the Family Research Council and the American Family Association were labeled as “hate groups” by an Army officer in an e-mail sent to his subordinates. The officer, a Lt. Col. Jack Rich, wrote, “Just want to ensure everyone is somewhat educated on some of the groups out there that do not share our Army Values.”

GOA ALERT: Sen. Toomey Betrays Gun Owners

Sellout is worse than the Feinstein gun ban!

Urgent action required. It is urgent that every gun owner call their Senators today and demand that they oppose the “See a Shrink, Lose your Guns” sell-out bill that is being authored by Senators Pat Toomey (R) and Joe Manchin (D) - but which also has Chuck Schumer’s fingerprints all over it. Call immediately at 202-224-3121.

Report: Background check deal reached but opposition builds

The Washington Post is reporting that a bipartisan deal has been hammered out on expanded background checks that would not include transactions between private citizens, unless the transaction began with on-line service or advertising.

Statement from the National Rifle Association Regarding Toomey-Manchin Background Check Proposal

Expanding background checks at gun shows will not prevent the next shooting, will not solve violent crime and will not keep our kids safe in schools. While the overwhelming rejection of President Obama and Mayor Bloomberg's "universal" background check agenda is a positive development, we have a broken mental health system that is not going to be fixed with more background checks at gun shows. The sad truth is that no background check would have prevented the tragedies in Newtown, Aurora or Tucson.

REPUBLICAN SENATORS CAVING?

Eight Wimp Out, Won’t Oppose Motion to Debate
By Harold Hutchison

Gun-grabbing Democrats in the Senate may be able to bypass Rand Paul’s filibuster with a cloture vote as early as Thursday as at least eight Republican Senators announced they would not support a filibuster on a motion to proceed. Among the Senators announcing that they would not back a filibuster are: Sens. John McCain (Ariz.), Dean Heller (Nev.), Johnny Isakson (Ga.), Lindsey Graham (S.C.), Susan Collins (Maine), Pat Toomey (Pa.), Mark Kirk (Ill.) and Kelly Ayotte (N.H.).

Who Voted to Let the UN Grab Your Guns?

Over the weekend, we came four votes away from the United States Senate giving our Constitutional rights over to the United Nations. In a 53-46 vote, the senate narrowly passed a measure that will stop the United States from entering into the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty.

The Statement of Purpose from the bill read:
To uphold Second Amendment rights and prevent the United States from entering into the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty.
