43 Senators Vote for Grassley Amendment

A border-security amendment by Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA) was defeated by the Senate. A total of 57 Senators voted for a motion to table his amendment, which would have required that the White House would certify “effective control” over the southwestern border before any of the 11 million illegal immigrants could be legalized.

Erdogan Issues “Final Warning”

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has issued a final warning to protestors in Gezi Park. The Islamist leader has been facing nearly two weeks of protest that have, at times, turned violent.

Erdogan has urged parents to “please take your children in hand and bring them out,” according to a report by VOA News. He has been in power since 2003, and since then has been jailing journalists to the point that Turkey, a NATO ally, is now regarded by the Committee to Protect Journalists as the worst in imprisoning journalists.

However, even as he vowed new revelations on the NSA story, questions emerged about his story. The London Telegraph noted that Snowden misrepresented his salary and questioned whether the Guardian did sufficient fact-checking.

Vice President Joe Biden will appear at “an event on gun control next Tuesday,” according to the a report by the Associated Press earlier today, and it may linked to a revelation in today’s Washington Post that Biden will be speaking with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid “in the coming days” to talk about “possible options” in their gun control effort.

The Senate began debate on the “immigration reform” legislation after blowing past a filibuster against the motion to proceed on the legislation. The debate starting has included numerous amendments as well. Senator John Cornyn introduced a 134-page amendment that prohibits starting any pathway to citizenship or a green card for the approximately 11 million illegal immigrants believed to be in the country.
