Report: Background check deal reached but opposition builds

The Washington Post is reporting that a bipartisan deal has been hammered out on expanded background checks that would not include transactions between private citizens, unless the transaction began with on-line service or advertising.

Expanding background checks at gun shows will not prevent the next shooting, will not solve violent crime and will not keep our kids safe in schools. While the overwhelming rejection of President Obama and Mayor Bloomberg's "universal" background check agenda is a positive development, we have a broken mental health system that is not going to be fixed with more background checks at gun shows. The sad truth is that no background check would have prevented the tragedies in Newtown, Aurora or Tucson.

Eight Wimp Out, Won’t Oppose Motion to Debate

Gun-grabbing Democrats in the Senate may be able to bypass Rand Paul’s filibuster with a cloture vote as early as Thursday as at least eight Republican Senators announced they would not support a filibuster on a motion to proceed. Among the Senators announcing that they would not back a filibuster are: Sens. John McCain (Ariz.), Dean Heller (Nev.), Johnny Isakson (Ga.), Lindsey Graham (S.C.), Susan Collins (Maine), Pat Toomey (Pa.), Mark Kirk (Ill.) and Kelly Ayotte (N.H.).

Over the weekend, we came four votes away from the United States Senate giving our Constitutional rights over to the United Nations. In a 53-46 vote, the senate narrowly passed a measure that will stop the United States from entering into the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty.

The Statement of Purpose from the bill read:
To uphold Second Amendment rights and prevent the United States from entering into the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty.

Lone Star College attack: ‘We wish we could carry guns’

A student at Lone Star Community College told a reporter for the local Fox News affiliate today that he wished he could carry a gun on campus as protection from the kind of afternoon incident that left 14 people stabbed by a suspect who is now in custody.

Naqibullah Killed in Jowzjan Province

ISAF confirmed that Naqibullah was killed during an operation in Jowzjan province, making him the third Taliban leader or facilitator to be killed or captured in since Thursday in that province. This is in addition to four other high-level insurgents being killed or captured over the weekend.

Naqibullah was involved in multiple direct fire and improvised explosive device attacks targeting Afghan and coalition forces. He also took part in Taliban “tax collections” in the province.

Al-Qaeda in Iraq Merges With Syrian Jihadists

Jihadists in Syria are now formally allied with al-Qaeda in Iraq after the two groups have merged. The merger was announced by al-Qaeda in Iraq leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who stated that his group was funding the Syrian jihadists.

According to a report by VOA News, the combination of al-Qaeda in Iraq and the al-Nusra Front will be called the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. The al-Nusra Front has been responsible for a number of car bombings, including one in Damascus that killed 15 people yesterday.
