Suspect is Wife of Disgraced Official

Authorities in Texas have made an arrest in the murders of Mike McLelland and his wife, who were found dead on 30 March in their home near Forney, Texas. The murders triggered speculation about involvement by Mexican drug cartels or the Aryan Brotherhood, but the truth turned out to be something very different, and closer to home.

At least two letters tainted with ricin have been intercepted before they could reach officials. The apparent targets of these letters were Senator Roger Wicker (R-MS) and Barack Obama.

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, the ricin-laced letters were detected at off-site screening facilities in Maryland. Ricin is a bio-toxin that was most famously used by the KGB to assassinate Bulgarian defector Georgi Markov in London in 1978.

Despite the Seattle Times editorial page call for the U.S. Senate to break what it called “the National Rifle Association’s destructive grip on gun-violence politics,” it appears that some are preparing to sound Taps over the Senate’s attempt to pass tough new gun restrictions in response to the Sandy Hook attack.
