Background check alternatives fail; Bloomberg threatens payback

Two background check alternative measures failed this afternoon in the Senate, including one that was abandoned earlier in the day by the Bellevue-based Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

Today, the misguided Manchin-Toomey-Schumer proposal failed in the U.S. Senate. This amendment would have criminalized certain private transfers of firearms between honest citizens, requiring lifelong friends, neighbors and some family members to get federal government permission to exercise a fundamental right or face prosecution. As we have noted previously, expanding background checks, at gun shows or elsewhere, will not reduce violent crime or keep our kids safe in their schools.

Authorities in Texas have made an arrest in the murders of Mike McLelland and his wife, who were found dead on 30 March in their home near Forney, Texas. The murders triggered speculation about involvement by Mexican drug cartels or the Aryan Brotherhood, but the truth turned out to be something very different, and closer to home.
