Air Guard readies for C-27J fleet

For the first time, Air National Guard aircrews will be the sole operators of a new aircraft straight off the assembly line. The C-27J Spartan, the latest propeller-driven airlifter, is an "extremely rugged" aircraft, designed for austere environments, said Air Force officials. It is about half the size of a C-130 Hercules and has 3.5 cargo pallet positions. Pakistan Foreign Minister: Offensive 'Very Successful'

Pakistan's foreign minister says his country's military is likely to uproot Taliban militants hiding in the mountains along the Afghan border by late December.  Shah Mahmood Qureshi said Sunday in Malaysia that Pakistan's offensive in South Waziristan has been "very successful" and has the Taliban fighters "on the run."  He spoke on the sidelines of a conference for developing Islamic countries. Russian Military Plane Crashes, 11 Dead

Russian authorities say a heavy-lift military cargo plane has crashed on takeoff in eastern Siberia, killing all 11 people on board. Investigators say the huge four-engine Ilyushin IL-76 had just taken off Sunday from Mirny, in the Yakutia region, when it rolled at an altitude of about 20 meters, crashed, and burst into flames. The plane, bound for the Siberian city of Irkutsk, went down in an open field about two kilometers from the runway. There were no reports of injuries on the ground.

Operational Update, Nov. 2: Afghan-International Security Force Detains Taliban Militant in Kandahar

A joint Afghan-International Security Assistance Force operation detained one militant in Kandahar province on Sunday while in pursuit of a Taliban District leader and senior commander of a sizable militant element in the area. The joint force targeted a location outside of the village of Daylanur, north of Kandahar City, after intelligence indicated militant activity. The joint force used escalation of force measures to stop two motorcycles travelling south toward the city.

ISF arrest 2 during search of suspected terrorist safe house in Baghdad

Iraqi Security Forces arrested two individuals today during a joint security operation searching for a suspected terrorist safe house in northern Baghdad.   Iraqi Security Forces and U.S. advisors, searched one building in a northern Baghdad neighborhood allegedly used to house Lebanese Hizbollah terrorist members. Based on evidence found at the scene, the security team arrested two individuals suspected of acquiring illegal weapons and financing Lebanese Hizbollah operations.
