Authorities in Zimbabwe Charge Lawyer With Obstruction for Objecting to Subpoena

Police in Zimbabwe Tuesday released a lawyer arrested Monday for objecting to a subpoena issued for his client, Peter Hitschmann, who served a prison term for possession of weapons in connection with an alleged 2006 plot to assassinate President Robert Mugabe. Attorney Mordecai Mahlangu was charged with obstructing justice after he wrote to Attorney General Johannes Tomana to protest the subpoena directing Hitschmann to testify in the terrorism trial of Senator Roy Bennett of the Movement for Democratic Change. Madagascar Talks Open With Plea for Compromise

Talks on Madagascar's political impasse have opened in Addis Ababa with a plea for rival factions to put aside mutual animosities for the sake of the country's economic survival. The atmosphere was tense as leaders of Madagascar's four main political movements met for a fourth round of negotiations on formation of a transitional government. Madagascar's de-facto President Andry Rajoelina sat at one side of the large African Union plenary hall.

Operational Update, Nov. 4: Afghan-International Security Forces Detains Militants in Five Operations

Afghan-international security forces detained several militants and recovered multiple weapons and explosives during five operations Tuesday. An Afghan-international security force detained several militants in Kandahar province while in pursuit of a Taliban commander associated with IED attacks in the province. Acting on intelligence that indicated the presence of the Taliban commander, the joint force targeted a vehicle outside of the village of Mokhanjak in Meyan Nashin District.

ISF arrest 21 in Baghdad, Bayji on suspicion of AQI VBIED activity

Iraqi Security Forces arrested 21 individuals during two joint security operations today targeting vehicle-borne improvised explosive device network members in Baghdad and Bayji.   Iraqi Security Forces operating in western Baghdad arrested 17 suspects while serving a warrant for an individual allegedly involved in VBIED attacks. The joint security team searched several buildings and sequestered multiple individuals for questioning.

ANP Confiscate 600 Pounds of Ammonium Nitrate, Neutralize Enemy Fighters

The Afghan national army, assisted by coalition forces, conducted a cordon and search in western Oruzgan province, Oct. 31, in order to increase security in support of the Afghanistan presidential run-off elections. The operation led to the seizure and safe destruction of 600 pounds of ammonium nitrate used to create roadside bombs. Several armed enemy fighters were killed after an unsuccessful attempt to engage the ANA with small arms fire. No civilians were injured during this operation.

ANA, ANP Detain Four, Kill Eleven in Zabul Province

The Afghan national army and Afghan national police, assisted by Coalition forces, conducted a cordon and search in the Arghandab District, Oct. 30, to search for a weapons cache and known insurgent leadership. The operation led to the detainment of four insurgents and several others being killed. The intent of the operation was to decrease roadside bomb usage along the major highway going into Qalat City in Deh Chopan.

Enhanced Combat Skills course preps Marines for Afghanistan

Little Rock officials lead joint force training effort at exercise

POPE AIR FORCE BASE, N.C. (AFNS)  -- Members of the 19th Airlift Wing from Little Rock Air Force Base, Ark., took the lead at the Joint Forcible Entry Exercise 10-01 held here Oct. 25 through 29.  The purpose of the JFEX is to re-establish forcible entry capability through airpower by combining Army and Air Force training needs, said Col. Dave Kasberg, the 19th Operations Group commander and JFEX air mission commander. "It's an integrated, joint focus with a common intel scenario," he said.

New system allows vehicle GPS to track location while in flight

Soldiers with 3rd Battalion, 27th Field Artillery (HIMARS), drove their High Mobility Artillery Rocket System out the rear of an Air Force C-17 Globemaster III at Pope Air Force Base, N.C., Oct. 22, with a new advancement that will get them into the fight faster. The 'Hot Panel' program allows the HIMARS to link into an aircraft's GPS and track itself in the air, anywhere in the world.
