LOGAR PROVINCE, AFGHANISTAN. It’s 0200; the night is calm and the sky is clear. If it weren’t for the occasional wild camel walking by the encampment, one might believe this was an overnight field exercise. But it is not.

BORDER TRANSITION TEAMS IN IRAQ

As the United States’ presence in Iraq dwindles down, and the shift of Iraqi control that began on 30 June, 2009, continues, US forces are becoming useful in another area of Iraq—the border region. Part of the Security Agreement that was negotiated with the Iraqi government is that Iraqis are taking control and the lead of their country. US forces are pulling out of the cities (part of the surge program) and moving back to their major bases in the country.

The Arctic Sea, a Finnish-owned, Maltese-flagged 320-foot cargo ship manned by a Russian crew, sailed off from the Finnish port of Pietarsaari on 21 July, supposedly carrying timber worth over $1.5 million. The ship was bound for the port of Bejaia in Algeria.
