Tymoshenko: Ukraine Threatened by Dictatorship

Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko is refusing to recognize Viktor Yanukovych as the next president of Ukraine, claiming that he is seeking to establish an anti-Ukrainian dictatorship.  In a televised address to the nation on Monday, Ms. Tymoshenko issued a call for a coalition of patriotic and democratic forces to oppose the man who defeated her in the February 7th presidential election.

IJC Operational Update, Feb. 23

Afghan soldiers from the 207th Commando Kandak, assisted by coalition forces, captured a Taliban leader and known weapons facilitator, in Gerani village, Bala Balouk District, Farah province Sunday. After the mission, Afghan and coalition leaders met with village elders to assess the security of the village and distribute food and medical supplies.

Operation Moshtarak Update for Feb. 22

Signs of steady progress in development and governance are being seen in central Helmand province. Bridges, roads and culverts are being repaired, bazaars are re-opening and attracting customers, and a variety of initiatives are being planned or implemented. Six projects are ongoing and 18 are planned in Northern Nad-e Ali under the Afghanistan Vouchers for Increased Production in Agriculture Plus program.

Army watercraft assists Colombian Red Cross with delivery of humanitarian aid

Humanitarian assistance in the form of food, water, mattresses and tents have poured into Haiti from countries around the world in the aftermath of the Jan. 12 earthquake that devastated the southern region of this small Caribbean nation. On Feb. 16, Army Landing Craft Utility 2006 assisted in the delivery of donations from the country of Colombia. The "Briscoe Station" transferred the supplies from a civilian vessel anchored off Killick, Haiti to a smaller pier on shore.

Gunston Hall Arrives in Rota to Prepare for Africa Partnership Station Mission

USS Gunston Hall (LSD 44), along with its embarked Africa Partnership Station staff, arrived in Rota, Spain, Feb. 22 after a 10-day transit across the Atlantic Ocean and on the heels of its participation in Haiti relief efforts. Gunston Hall is serving as the flagship for African Partnership Station (APS) West 2010, an international initiative designed by Naval Forces Europe and Naval Forces Africa to foster enhanced maritime safety and security in west and central Africa.
