President Obama rejected the notion of American law enforcement officials carrying firearms in Mexico during a joint press conference with Mexican President Felipe Calderon.

"There are laws in place in Mexico that say that our agents should not be armed," Obama was quoted by FoxNews.com as saying. The debate had emerged in the wake of the murder of ICE agent Jaime Zapata by members of the Zetas drug cartel.

The two presidents had pledged to continue cooperation in the drug war. “Tens of thousands of Mexicans - innocent citizens and dedicated security forces - have lost their lives," President Obama said during the news conference. "I have reaffirmed to President Calderon that in this cause, Mexico has a full partner with the United States."
