Charged in Relation to Assassination of Benazir Bhutto
By Harold Hutchison

Former Pakistani army chief Pervez Musharraf’s trial over alleged involvement in the assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto has begun. The former army chief, who took power in 1999 in a military coup, gave up power in 2008.

Bhutto was killed in December, 2007, when she was shot during an attack that also included the use of a murder-suicide bomber. The Pakistani government has not outlined why Musharraf is being charged after his return from exile in a bid to resurrect a political career.

After the assassination, Musharraf blamed the Taliban for the assassination, while some reports claimed he either had advance knowledge of the attack or failed to provide adequate security for the former prime minister. Musharraf has plead not guilty to all charges.
