Numerous Countries Refuse Asylum
By Harold Hutchison

Self-proclaimed whistleblower Edward Snowden has been refused asylum by at least eight countries. This comes after news of at least 21 applications have been made for protection as Snowden faces legal charges stemming from his disclosure of classified documents pertaining to NSA surveillance programs.

Countries that have rejected his request include Brazil, Austria, Ecuador, Finland, Ireland, India, and the Netherlands. Snowden had pulled his application for asylum from Russia as the result of conditions Vladimir Putin had imposed, which included a cessation of future disclosures.

Snowden’s asylum applications are still pending in a number of other countries. Notable among them are France and Iceland. However, Venezuela, is reportedly considering granting the request.
