MOM, APPLE PIE, AND GUN GRABS?
Manipulating Our Schools and Doctors Against the Second Amendment

COMING AT THE SECOND AMENDMENT FROM ALL ANGLES
The anti-gunners are coming at your Second Amendment rights from all angles now. It isn’t just the Hollywood stars or the anti-gun politicians or activists that you have to worry about – now the fight is coming from a number of other angles. It could even be your local PTA!
Your Second Amendment rights are at risk from many angles, and don’t think the anti-gunners are not creative. Recall how they attempted to team up with some of the lawyers responsible for the tobacco lawsuits to bankrupt gun manufacturers? They figured that if gun makers went out of business, it didn’t matter if NRA members and gun owners beat them on the legislative front. NRA was able to stop those lawsuits, eventually with federal legislation, but this was a warning that anti-gunners will look to take away your gun rights any way they can.
Now, anti-gunners are at it again in the wake of the tragic murder of 20 innocent children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. This time, the push may come from any angle. It could be your family doctor, it could be the local PTA. It could even come from your bank! The threats are all over the place. Now, more than ever, it is important to be vigilant and involved.
THE THREAT FROM YOUR FAMILY DOCTOR
Anti-gunners lose far more often than not when Second Amendment supporters get involved. In Illinois, involved Second Amendment supporters flooded the Illinois House, de-railing a sweeping gun ban bill, SB2899, that was supported by the governor and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, the former chief of staff to Barack Obama. But they don’t place all their eggs in the legislation basket.
Some of the threats could come from your family doctor or local PTA. The medical angle has often been away from the headlines, but it is insidious. For years, anti-gunners have made claims that gun ownership is a “virus” causing the “disease” of violent crime. While many of these claims occur in academia, your family doctor could be affected as he reads magazines like the Journal of the American Medical Association. Recently, three doctors from Harvard University, Dariush Mozaffarian, David Hemenway and David Ludwig, took to that publication to call for “a new, substantial national tax on all firearms and ammunition” to pay for unspecified programs to combat “gun violence.”
Things got to the point where in Florida, property manager Amber Ullman was dropped by her doctor for refusing to answer whether she owned a gun. The resulting controversy lead to legislation in Florida that blocked doctors from asking. But anti-gunners went to court, and got the law blocked. But if doctors make it a habit to drop patients who don’t answer questions about gun ownership, things could get sticky for gun owners.
THE LOCAL PTA – BAKE SALES, SCHOOL DANCES, GUN CONTROL??
Local PTAs could become a new threat to gun rights. One lobbyist told the Washington Post, “You’ll start to see teachers’ groups step in, maybe even the PTAs. You may even start to see church groups, synagogues [get involved] ... This is going to be a broader community safety issue beyond the usual entrenched interest groups.”
So, how do you keep the local PTA on the sidelines, or better yet, get them supporting the Second Amendment? The first part of the answer is to simply show up. In Utah, participation in PTAs is as low as 3 percent, according to a 2012 article in the Salt Lake Tribune. A 2010 Baltimore Sun article pegged parental participation at below 10 percent. In other words, in a school with 500 students, would be as few as 15 families are involved in the PTA. Your voice will likely be magnified just by showing up. But showing up is not all that is needed. Be sure you have the facts correct when you are involved.
Keeping eyes and ears open will be vital. According to one NRA Fact Sheet, the President-Elect of the National PTA was on the board of Ceasefire, Inc., a national anti-gun group, in 2004. As of 2010, the National PTA was listed as an organization that had anti-gun policies by the NRA. Controlling the local PTAs is a good first step towards countering the anti-gun policies of the national body.
YOUR BANK – DOING GUN CONTROL VIA A BACK DOOR?
Your bank may also be fighting your Second Amendment rights. In April, 2012, reports surfaced that Bank of America asked McMillan Group International to bank elsewhere because in the words of an executive of the bank, “We have to assess the risk of doing business with a firearms related industry.”
Then, in January, information came to light concerning a second firearms manufacturer, American Spirit Arms, which also had trouble with Bank of America. This time, instead of closing the accounts, the bank was holding the deposits for “further review” for as long as two weeks. As of 7 January, though, the company reported, “We have now gotten most of the deposits and have set up new accounts with a local bank.”
Anti-gunners are pushing other businesses to stop dealing with the NRA. A boycott of the Wyndham Hotel Group has been declared over the group offering NRA members discounts. Just wait until they start looking into whether local businesses support the NRA.
To keep informed, you need to get involved. Go to http://membership.nrahq.org/ to join the NRA. Then go to https://www.nraila.org/get-involved-locally/forms/secure/frontlines.aspx to become part of NRA-ILA’s Frontlines to protect your gun rights from all sorts of threats.
