THE OTHER PISTOLS OF THE DEFENSE DEPARTMENT

The M11 And a Supporting Cast
By SOF

While the M9 (night-time qualification pictured left) gets most of the attention among pistols used by the United States military, it is not the only such pistol used. The United States military has other pistols in service, some of which are old, some not so old.

One of the more common pistols aside from the M9 is the M11. Like the M9, it is a variation on a European “wondernine” pistol. While the M9 was based on the Beretta Model 92, the M11 is  based on the SIG Sauer P228. Both pistols fire the 9x19mm NATO round, but their standard magazines are different: The M9 uses a 15-round magazine, while the M11 used a 13-round magazine. The M11A1, first issued in 2012, went with a 15-round magazine.

By SOF

The M203 and M320 40mm grenade launchers have given American infantry some very nice firepower at the squad and fire-team level. However, the Army is now working to give those grenade launchers even more firepower through a new program.

According to an article in Army Technology Magazine, the Army is trying to develop smarter rounds for the under-rifle grenade launchers currently in service by making the grenades “smarter.” The system is being described as a complement to the XM25 Counter Defilade Target Engagement System, also known as the Punisher.

STRYKERS DO THEIR THING

GETTING THE MARINES THERE

Amphibious Assault Vessels of the Navy
By SOF

The Marines have long had a tradition of being America’s “911 Force.” However, there is one big question: How do you get the Marines there?

There are a number of answers to that question, but one of the major answers centers around the amphibious assault ships in service with the United States Navy. These vessels are probably some of the most deceptively powerful vessels in the world. When one looks at it, there are perhaps three aircraft carriers in the world more powerful than the Wasp-class amphibious assault ships.
