Hero of 73 Easting to Get Third Star
By Harold Hutchison
H. R. McMaster will be promoted to lieutenant general, a promotion that did not seem likely seven years ago, when he was twice passed over for brigadier general.
According to a DOD press release, McMaster’s new assignment will be to serve as deputy commanding general, futures/director, Army Capabilities Integration Center, U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia.
McMaster received the Silver Star for heroism during the Battle of 73 Easting, which he discussed in an interview in Tom Clancy’s Armored Cav. He later wrote the book Dereliction of Duty, about command failures in Washington during the Vietnam War. He later commanded the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment in al-Anbar province during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
McMaster was promoted to major general in June, 2012, and received a promotion to brigader general in 2008.
