Mortarman’s Valor Recognized
By Harold Hutchison
Sgt. William Stacey was awarded the Bronze Star with Combat Distinguishing Device for his heroism while serving in Afghanistan today.
On 26 November, 2011, insurgents attacked his section with medium machine gun fire. During that engagement, Sgt. Stacey moved over 200 meters on exposed terrain to mark his section’s position to prevent a friendly-fire incident. Then, on 13 December, 2011, Sgt. Stacey’s section came under attack from five locations. Sgt. Stacey and his squad held back numerous attacks in that engagement.
Sgt. Stacey was killed in action on 31 January, 2012, and the Bronze Star was presented to his family. Sgt. Stacy also received Purple Heart Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Unit Commendation, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with two bronze star devices, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon with silver star device and the NATO Medal-ISAF Afghanistan.
