Veteran Suicides Climbing
By Harold Hutchison

America is losing 23 veterans a day to suicide, and the problems have been getting worse in recent years. To put that number in perspective, the number per day translate to over 8300 veterans a year committing suicide.

According to a report by Breitbart News, the stats are staggering. The suicide rate has climbed by over 30% among active-duty military since 2008. A report covering suicides in 2011 noted that 301 suicides occurred among active-duty troops that year.

The report from Breitbart News comes as the Center for Investigative Reporting revealed that the Department of Veterans’ Affairs made payments totaling $200 million to hundreds of families to settle wrongful death cases in 49 states. The cases included that of a veteran who shot himself after being denied benefits for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), leaving his widow and two children to live out of a car.

The House Committee on Veteran’s Affairs will hold a hearing on the matter on 9 April.
