ISAF Joint Command Morning Operational Update

A combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban leader , along with several of his associates, during a security operation in the Nahr-e Saraj district, Hemland province.

The leader provided targeting information on Afghan security forces, roadside bomb making materials and ammunition to Taliban members.

In addition to the capture of the Taliban leader and detainment of several suspected insurgents, the security force confiscated weapons and 10 pounds (5 kilograms) of heroin during the operation.

South

In Shorabak district, Kandahar province, yesterday, a coalition force patrol discovered two separate caches containing IED-making materials. The caches contained a total of 4,500 pounds (2,045 kgs) of ammonium nitrate. Coalition forces safely destroyed the materials on site.

Also in Kandahar district, Kandahar province, a combined Afghan and coalition force captured a Taliban weapons facilitator. The facilitator was a suicide attack planner in Kandahar. Multiple suspected insurgents were also detained during the operation.

A coalition force patrol discovered an ammunitions cache in Sangin district, Helmand province, yesterday. The cache consisted for three crates of 12.7mm rounds and 20mm anti-aircraft rounds. The ammunition was seized and will be destroyed at a later date.

East

In Terayzai district, Khost province, a combined Afghan and coalition force patrol seized a weapons cache, yesterday. The cache consisted of five rocket propelled grenade propellants, four RPG rounds, one RPG launcher, one light machine gun, one recoilless rifle and four recoilless rifle rounds. The cache will be safely destroyed at a later date.

In Behsud district, Nangarhar province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban leader and one of his associates during a security operation yesterday.

Prior to his detainment the leader facilitated the movement of suicide bombers. Additionally, he organized attacks against Afghan forces in the region. The security force also detained one suspected insurgent during the operation.

Finally, a combined Afghan and coalition security force led an operation in search of a Taliban leader in the Zurmat district, Paktiya province. The leader organizes and directs attack against Afghan forces and joins with area insurgent leaders to plan attacks throughout the region. The security force detained two suspected insurgents during the operation.
