ISAF Joint Command morning operational update

A combined Afghan and coalition security force killed several insurgents and detained several more while searching for a senior Taliban leader in Musa Qal’ah District, Helmand province, yesterday.

The senior leader provides operational guidance and coordinates Taliban organizational issues. Additionally, he receives reports from subordinate leaders about planned and executed attacks.

As the combined force began clearing a compound suspected to belong to the leader, numerous insurgents opened fire on the force. The force returned fire, resulting in the deaths of the attacking insurgents. The detainees were taken for further questioning.

South

An Afghan and coalition combined security force detained a Taliban facilitator and several of his associates during a security operation in Panjwa’i District, Kandahar province, yesterday. The facilitator was involved in the kidnapping of local police force members in Panjwa’i District and in the movement of lethal aid from Pakistan-based associates.

In Shajoy District, Zabul province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained one suspected insurgent during a security operation targeting a Taliban leader, yesterday. The leader directs roadside bomb placements and coordinates attacks against Afghan and coalition security forces.

East

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained a Taliban facilitator and one other suspected insurgent during a security operation in Mohammad Agha District, Logar province, yesterday. The facilitator was involved in staging and assisting attacks against Afghan and coalition security forces spanning from Logar province to Kabul City.

In Ghazni city, Ghazni province, an Afghan and coalition combined security force detained a Taliban leader and two of his associates, yesterday. The leader was responsible for directing fighters, planning attacks and coordinating tactics with other insurgents in the area.

Finally, in Khost District, Khost province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents while searching for a Haqqani Network leader. The leader provides strategic-level coordination for roadside bomb placements and directs attacks against Afghan and coalitions security forces.
