INDIA NOW OUR TOP ARMS BUYER
India has now become the top weapons buyer from the United States over the last three years. America has, in turn displaced Russia as India’s top source of arms.
According to a report by VOA News, the United States has made arms deals with India totaling $5.5 billion. This is $1.5 billion higher than similar deals that India has made with Russia, a long-time provider of weapons to the world’s largest democracy.
Russia has provided many big-ticket items to India, including a modified Kiev-class aircraft carrier and a number of Su-30MKI “Flanker” multi-role fighters. Russia has historically provided many warships as well, including Kashin-class destroyers, Talwar-class frigates, and submarines from the Kilo and Foxtrot classes. Other Indian warships being built in India use Russian systems like the SA-N-7 and SA-N-12 surface-to-air missiles, and anti-ship missiles like the Klub.
American weapon sales to India have included an Austin-class landing ship, C-17 and C-130J cargo planes, and Apache and Chinook helicopters. The United States is also selling M777 howitzers to India.
