As Much As $49 Million Wasted in FY2012
The Department of Homeland Security blew almost $50 million on vehicles it rarely – if ever – use in fiscal year 2012. The Department reportedly drove about 60% of its vehicles less than 12,000 miles per year.
According to a report by GovExec.com, an audit by the Inspector General of the Department of Homeland Security revealed the under-use of a significant portion of the 56,000 vehicles the department owned. The department, which has numerous agencies, including the Coast Guard, Customs and Border Patrol, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the Secret Service, spends a total of $534 million every year.
