By Harold Hutchison

When a V-22 Osprey went down during African Lion 12 in Morocco on 11 April, 2012, six Marines acted quickly to aid their fellow Marines. They were able to save two of their fellow Marines, while two others were mortally wounded in the crash.

Five Marines were awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal on 3 June:
* Gunnery Sgt. Joseph A. Alvarez
* Sgt. Daniel J. Beers
* Sgt. Christopher J. Ewain
* Cpl. Michael Z. Pearson
* Cpl. Steve T. Hanson

A sixth Marine, Sgt. Merritt C. Huntley, will receive the medal, which is the Navy’s highest award for valor in a situation not involving combat, at a later date.
