FIRST DAY, LAST MISSION
In 1970, I was an in-country transfer from the 765th Transportation Battalion located in Vung Tau, Vietnam. Upon my arrival at Tay Ninh, I reported to the tactical operations center (TOC) and was interviewed by the commanding officer (CO), who interviewed all incoming scouts. The interview was personable and to the point. Volunteering for scouts was simple, said Major Harris. Live long enough to fulfill a six-month commitment of flying as an Oscar (co-pilot) or Torque (door gunner), and then pick your own duty for the remainder of your tour.
