North Korea carried out a third nuclear test on 12 February, its third test of a nuclear device. According to multiple media reports, the test was said to be larger than the first two tests, conducted in 2006 and 2009.

The test was reported the same day that Barack Obama was to give his State of the Union address. The test also occurred less than two days after The Hill reported that the Obama Administration was planning to push a reduction of the U.S. nuclear arsenal by one-third.

A string operation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosive (BATFE) became a fiasco when burglars broke into the building being used for the sting. While Obama has used executive orders to bypass Congress on issues like welfare reform and immigration, there are real limits to the extent he can use those powers.
