KEEPING SOMALI PIRATES AWAY FROM A FLOATING BOMB

(From the May 2013 Issue)
By Ike V. Montgomery

A yellow dot enters the dark, round field of a radar screen. Its appearance does not go unnoticed in the wheelhouse of the hijacked, commercial fishing boat—now a pirate “mother ship.” The Somali leader of the “pirate attack group” (NATO’s term for an operational raider unit) studies the screen. After a few minutes, he orders the boat’s hostage crewmen to steer an intercept course with the unidentified ship, still a few dozen nautical miles away on the Indian Ocean.

Start of a UN Gun Grab?
By Harold Hutchison

After negotiations to build a consensus failed, the UN General Assembly rammed through the Arms Trade Treaty by a vote of 154 to 3, with 23 abstentions. The only three “no” votes were Syria, Iran, and North Korea.

The Obama Administration abandoned its insistence upon consensus late Thursday, paving the way for the General Assembly to ram through the treaty.

Flame Retardant Uniforms, and Other Issues

-Article by Mike Kupari

Over the last several years, there has been a push across the services to give troops on the ground flame retardant uniforms. Often, these uniforms are described as providing protection from IEDs, but that's not exactly true. An Improvised Explosive Device is still just an explosive. Many IEDs have utilized conventional ordnance as the main charge, and even homemade explosives don't necessarily produce big fireballs. You're not any more likely to be set on fire by an IED than you are by a land mine, artillery shell, or any other explosive device.

THE STATE OF COLORADO

The State of Colorado, along with some others, is Ground Zero for national anti-gun legislative efforts this session. While it appears at first glance that the proposed bills are full of unintended consequences, it’s more likely they are being crafted with malice aforethought. For instance, Colorado guides and outfitters are being warned by their out-of-state clients that they will boycott Colorado if four specific anti-gun bills are passed into law this session.

As a result, China’s effort to wipe out the Pacific Fleet’s carriers in San Diego with an ICBM strike is halted.

NORTH KOREA TESTS NUKE!

By Harold Hutchison

North Korea carried out a third nuclear test on 12 February, its third test of a nuclear device. According to multiple media reports, the test was said to be larger than the first two tests, conducted in 2006 and 2009.

The test was reported the same day that Barack Obama was to give his State of the Union address. The test also occurred less than two days after The Hill reported that the Obama Administration was planning to push a reduction of the U.S. nuclear arsenal by one-third.
