AN EPIC FILIBUSTER!
Rand Paul Holds The Floor For 13 Hours Over Drones
By Harold Hutchison
Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) took to the Senate floor in an old-school filibuster that lasted for over 13 hours in protestation of the Obama Administration’s policies on the use of UAVs to target American citizens in the United States. UAV strikes have been a major aspect of the Obama Administration’s counter-terror strategy.
“I rise today to begin to filibuster John Brennan’s nomination for the CIA. I will speak until I can no longer speak. I will speak as long as it takes until the alarm is sounded from coast to coast that our Constitution is important, that your rights to trial by jury are precious, that no American should be killed by a drone on American soil without first being charged with a crime, without first being found to be guilty by a court,” Paul said, opening the lengthy speaking.
During the filibuster, Paul was joined by other Senators, including freshman Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), Marco Rubio (R-FL), Mark Lee (R-UT), and Ron Wyden (D-OR). Despite this filibuster, and Senator Paul’s speech, Brennan is still expected to be confirmed as CIA Director.
