CLOSURE OF EMBASSIES EXTENDED
Shutdown to Last Rest of Week
By Harold Hutchison
The closure of American embassies in 19 countries, most of them in the Middle East, has been extended to cover the rest of this week. The shutdown comes amidst warnings of a planned al-Qaeda attack.
American embassies in Iraq, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Algeria are re-opening, but others, including those in Israel, Egypt, Kuwait, and Yemen are remaining closed. Yemen is where al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula is based.
“Al-Qaida is in many ways stronger than it was before 9/11 because it's mutated and it's spread and it came out of some different directions,” Representative Peter King (R-NY) said. “Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula is probably the most deadly of all the al-Qaida affiliates.”
