African Rogue Elephants Saved With Chili Guns
Wildlife Conflict Management – Chirundu Elephant programme (Zimbabwe)
By Founder: Aaron Young
Roughly 6 weeks ago I got confirmation of a PAC (problem animal control) ruling on an elephant in Chirundu (Zimbabwe). This means imminent destruction, or simply put he would be shot because he was pushing the locals around. I wanted to re-locate him, but when we assessed this it was found to be a pointless exercise. Elephants will trek forever to find their home and if at best he decided to accept his new home, then he would pull into the nearest source of easy & sweet food and dig in. So move him to be shot elsewhere wasn’t a smart move. So it was decided to try a behavior modification programme that uses Chilli in different forms. Our form was firing a projectile (filled with Chilli oil) with a homemade “Gun” from as close range as possible.
