Agents Demonized for Defending Themselves, Enforcing the Law
By Harold Hutchison
A number of media outlets have been helping to demonize Customs and Border Patrol agents who defend themselves, with the ultimate objective of “neutering” that law enforcement agency’s efforts to secure the border. This comes as the Obama Administration and Democrats in Congress continue to push for amnesty as part of so-called “comprehensive immigration reform” legislation.

According to a report by Breitbart Texas, the National Association of Former Border Patrol Officers (NAFBPO), an organization that has been opposing amnesty since its founding in 2007, is sounding the alert, especially as groups like the American Civil Liberties Union have been targeting the Border Patrol over some shootings, including an 18 February incident where a 41-year-old Mexican was shot by a Border Patrol agent after he threw rocks - including one that was the size of a basketball – at the agent, who defended himself.

According to the El Paso Times, the ACLU has fled a number of lawsuits against Border Patrol agents, claiming among other things that agents were responsible for a miscarriage. The ACLU also claimed that since 2010, 22 people had been killed by Border Patrol agents in shootings. One ACLU official claimed, “If your local police department had shot and killed 22 people, you would be asking question[s].” The organization supported the new rules of engagement issued last month by CBP Chief Michael Fisher.

Breitbart Texas reported that Border Patrol agents had been attacked by rock throwers on 185 occasions in 2010 alone. Zack Taylor, Chairman of the NAFBPO, told Breitbart Texas that since 2007, there had been over 6,000 assaults on Border Patrol agents. “America is not being told the truth by the media,” Taylor said.

An official with the National Border Patrol Council told Bretbart Texas last month that the Border Patrol reported 22 fatal shootings by agents since 2010, a figure less than half of the number of incidents the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported n 2012 alone. “This is a political attack by special interests groups and the ACLU to limit the effectiveness of Border Patrol. The ACLU is going after low hanging fruit, they’ve seen the agency back down in the past,” NBPC Vice President Shawn Moran said.

The NAFBPO warns that the campaign to discredit the Border Patrol could endanger the country, with Taylor noting that “the facts that both governmental and non-governmental entities inside the United States continue to do the bidding of these transnational criminals by discrediting those who disrupt cross border criminal activity aimed at American citizens” are being carefully ignored by most of the media.
