ANOTHER RAND PAUL FILIBUSTER?
Kentucky Senator One of Three Opposing Motion to Proceed
By Harold Hutchison
Senator Rand Paul could be leading another filibuster – this time in support of the Second Amendment. In a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, the Kentucky Republican, along with Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Mark Lee (R-UT), vowed to oppose the motion to proceed on legislation emerging from the Senate Judiciary Committee.
“The Second Amendment to the Constitution protects citizens' right to self-defense. It speaks to history's lesson that government cannot be in all places at all times, and history's warning about the oppression of a government that tries,” the Senators wrote.
Rand Paul gained national attention with a filibuster against the nomination of CIA Director John Brennan that lasted nearly 13 hours, centering on the use of unmanned aerial vehicles to attack Americans on American soil.
“We will oppose the motion to proceed to any legislation that will serve as a vehicle for any additional gun restrictions,” the three senators told Reid.
