Iraqi Army exhibits show of strength

Afghan, Coalition Troops Kill, Capture Hundreds of Insurgents

Afghan and coalition forces killed or captured hundreds of Taliban and Haqqani extremists during the past month, military officials said.

In August, the security forces detained more than 500 insurgents and killed 160 more. Among the captured or killed were 23 Haqqani network chiefs and 53 Taliban leaders. These leadership figures include shadow governors, commanders, subcommanders and weapons facilitators.

Taliban shadow governor targeted in Helmand

An Afghan and coalition security force detained several insurgents in Helmand province Tuesday while in pursuit of a Taliban shadow governor in Musa Qal'ah District.

During the course of the operation, four insurgents were also killed.

Successful airstrike against senior Taliban commander

Coalition forces carried out an air strike on a senior Taliban commander south of Sangin, Helmand province Sunday, Aug. 29.

The target of the operation, Qari Hazrat, an insurgent commander who had been conducting hit and run attack in the Sangin and Qaleh Ye Gaz areas against Afghan and coalition forces, was killed in the strike, along with three other insurgents.
