Weapons turned in, found in Kandahar

A large number of explosive devices were discovered by International Security Assistance Forces in Kandahar province Wednesday.

A local man who turned in devices Tuesday, returned to a combat outpost with 60 additional directional fragmentation charges. All of the devices contained detonation cord.

The charges will be combined with the 65 devices the man previously turned in and be safely destroyed.

Afghan air assault nets weapons, ammo, intel

In the early morning hours of Oct. 8, U.S. and Afghan National Army Soldiers conducted a successful air-assault operation in the mountains of Khowst Province, resulting in the location and destruction of two insurgent weapons caches.

The operation, named "War Old Coffee," came after weeks of intelligence gathering, planning and mission rehearsals by U.S. Soldiers of Apache Troop, 1st Squadron, 33rd Cavalry Regiment, with assistance from their ANA partners.

Afghans report, turn in explosives, weapons

A weapons cache and explosive material were taken out of enemy hands after locals reported and turned in the items in eastern and southern Afghanistan in the last two days.

A man brought 65 directional fragmentation charges to a combat outpost in Kandahar province, Tuesday, Oct. 12. The charges appear to have been mass produced and had detonation cord attached to them.

The charges have been safeguarded in a destruction pit and will be destroyed in place.

Taliban senior leader captured by Afghan-led force in Marjah

An Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban senior leader who leads up to 20 fighters in the Sistani area of Marjah district, along with two of his associates, during an overnight operation in Helmand province.

Intelligence tips led the joint security force to a remote compound in Marjah district to search for the targeted individual. Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully and then the joint security force cleared and secured the compound.

JOINT BASE BALAD, Iraq (AFNS) -- As the responsible drawdown of forces in Iraq continues, the Airmen of the 332nd Expeditionary Logistics Readiness Squadron Material Management Flight here have gone back to basics and cut down excess assets at the base.

The 35 people in supply now keep track of some 7,000 required line items, valued at $30 million. Other items, shipped as part of the drawdown, are on their way to other locations to continue to support operations around the world.

ISAF confirms Taliban leader killed in Kandahar

The International Security Assistance Force confirmed the death of Mullah Abdul Nafi, a Taliban leader and improvised explosive device facilitator responsible for planning and coordinating attacks throughout the Shah Wali Kot District of Kandahar province.

During a routine route-clearing operation Wednesday in northern Kandahar province, Afghan National Security and International Security Assistance Forces spotted several suspected insurgents and went to investigate.

ISAF confirms Taliban senior leader captured in Kandahar

The International Security Assistance Force confirmed the capture of a Taliban senior leader based in Dand District during an operation Tuesday in Kandahar province.

The target coordinated improvised explosive device attacks and commanded a kidnapping cell targeting Afghan government officials and local nationals supportive of coalition forces.

Marine awarded for actions during OEF

Staff Sgt. Rodrigo B. Arias-Hernandez recently received the Bronze Star Award with Combat V for his actions during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan Aug. 19-20, 2009.

Arias-Hernandez, a battery gunnery sergeant for Headquarters Battery, 3rd Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, was a company advisor with Embedded Training Team 2-8, Regional Corps Advisory Command-Central 3-7, 201st Corps, Afghan National Army, at the time.
