Coalition forces repel attack, kill several insurgents

International Security Assistance Forces repelled an insurgent attack while conducting a dismounted patrol in the Sangin district of Helmand province Monday.

Initially coming under attack from small arms fire, coalition forces identified the firing position as a building and returned fire. After the insurgents fired rocket propelled grenades, coalition forces called for close air support. The insurgent position was engaged with precision weapons with all ordnance was observed impacting upon the intended target.

Afghan, coalition force kills Taliban district leader in Takhar

Coalition forces conducted a precision air strike in Takhar province yesterday, killing Qari Mahmad Umar, an Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan senior leader, who was serving as the Taliban district leader for Khwajah Bahawuddin.

Umar was an improvised explosive device expert and trainer involved in facilitating supplies as well as constructing and emplacing IED's in northern Takhar and Kunduz provinces.

Haqqani Network leader captured in Paktiya overnight

An Afghan and coalition security force captured a Haqqani Network leader who handled the command and control of insurgent attacks during an overnight operation in Paktiya province.

The Haqqani leader is also involved in conducting attacks against coalition force checkpoints.

Intelligence reports led the security force to a remote compound in Zurmat district to search for the targeted individual. Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully, and then the security force cleared and secured the area.

Assassination cell leader captured overnight

An Afghan and coalition security force captured the Taliban assassination cell senior leader for Kandahar City during an overnight operation in the city.

His group is responsible for several assassinations of Afghan government officials, including the deputy mayor of Kandahar City and a National Defense Service officer earlier this month.

Afghan, coalition force kills Taliban leader in Paktika overnight

An Afghan and coalition security force killed Mustafa, a Taliban leader who commanded a cell of fighters in facilitating and emplacing improvised explosive devices along Afghan public roads, in Paktika province overnight.

Intelligence reports led the security force to a compound southwest of Maspikay in Omnah district to search for the individual. As the security force approached the targeted compound, Mustafa, armed with an AK-47, emerged from the compound and threatened the security force. The security force reacted by shooting and killing him.

Iraqi Police complete mid-course curriculum with aid of Army MPs

More than 100 Iraqi Police officers from throughout Baghdad recently completed important coursework in human rights, officer development, train-the-trainer and counter-insurgency.

The courses are now taught by Iraqi instructors, though Soldiers from the 501st Military Police Company, 1st Armored Division advise them on course curriculum and assist in logistical support for the training missions.

Several insurgents killed during joint operation

An Afghan National Security and International Security Assistance Force patrol killed several insurgents and detained two suspected insurgents during an operation in Shah Wali Kot District, Kandahar province, Thursday.

Multiple intelligence sources and tips from local citizens led the joint force to the site of a suspected weapons cache.

As the patrol entered the area, several armed insurgents attempted to flee. They ran towards another element of the security force. They presented hostile intent and were killed.
