Afghan, coalition forces detain Haqqani Network leader in Khost

Afghan and coalition forces captured a Haqqani Network leader who conducts attacks against Afghan National Security Forces and coalition forces during a security operation in Khost province yesterday.

Intelligence reports indicate the Haqqani Network leader facilitates movement of improvised explosive device making materials from Pakistan into Khost province. He was responsible for IED attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

Afghan, coalition forces detain Taliban leaders in Nangarhar

Afghan and coalition forces detained a Taliban leader and a Taliban facilitator during a joint security operation in Nangarhar province yesterday.

Joint forces have now detained six Taliban leaders and 18 suspected insurgents in the province since Dec. 1.

The Taliban leader operated within Pachir wa Agam district, facilitating foreign fighters and suicide bombers to attack coalition forces and government officials in Jalalabad, Behsud and Pachir wa Agam districts.

B-52 Tail-gunner Recalls MiG Downing

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo., Dec. 27, 2010 – If the landmarks here could speak, the B-52 Stratofortress bomber sitting near the academy’s north gate would have quite a Vietnam War story to tell.

The crew of the “Diamond Lil,” a B-52D, tail number 55-083, took off from Utapao Royal Thai Naval Airfield on Christmas Eve in 1972. The crew’s mission was to bomb the North Vietnamese railroad yards at Thai Nguyen as part of Operation Linebacker II, which took place Dec. 18 to 29, 1972.

ISAF Joint Command operational update

More than 10 insurgents were killed and others wounded by Afghan National Security Forces and International Security Assistance Force during separate clearing operations in southern and eastern Afghanistan over the last 24 hours.

In Musa Qal’ah district, Helmand province, coalition forces spotted insurgents emplacing an improvised explosive device. After gaining positive identification, coalition forces engaged the enemy position with small arms fire, killing several insurgents.

Forces target Taliban explosive-device facility with precision air strike

Coalition forces conducted a precision air strike in Ghazni province yesterday targeting a suspected Taliban house-borne improvised explosive device facility.

Intelligence sources indicated that a compound frequented by a Taliban leader responsible for attacks on Afghan National Security Forces in the Gelan district was likely being used as a house-borne IED facility in order to kill Afghan National Security and coalition force personnel. Recent reporting indicates his group was also making two suicide vehicle-borne IED's to be used against coalition forces operating in the province.

New MEDEVAC helicopters take flight in Iraq

The Army's newest MEDEVAC helicopter is seeing action for the first time in Iraq while serving as a test bed with a Vermont National Guard aviation company.

The Soldiers of C company, 3rd Battalion, 126th Aviation Regiment, deployed in November with a dozen HH-60M MEDEVAC helicopters, the latest medical variant of the Army's Black Hawk airframe.

In addition to their MEDEVAC mission, the unit's crews are working with representatives from Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation to work through the kinks of the aircraft's new systems.

Already the new bird is popular with crew.

An Afghan Army and ISAF patrol spotted some insurgents emplacing an improvised explosive device in Sangin district, Helmand province, Dec. 22. After gaining positive identification, combined forces engaged the enemy position, killing two insurgents.
