Insurgents in Zabul province inflicted attacks against Afghan civilians April 6, injuring six children.

A combined Afghan and coalition force killed several insurgents, detained numerous suspected insurgents and discovered a weapons cache during a security operation in Qaisar district, Faryab province, yesterday.

The forces conducted a clearing operation to disrupt a Taliban safe haven known for improvised explosive device activity and weapons cache sites near Khwaja Kinti village in the district.

118th Sapper Company delivers security through counter-IED efforts

In late August 2010, the soldiers of the 118th Sapper Company arrived at Forward Operating Base Salerno, Afghanistan. A mere 10 days and four missions later, they took the helm of Route Clearance Package 37. Assigned to clear routes and counter the enemy’s attempts to emplace improvised explosive devices in their area of operations, they had no idea what the next year of their lives would bring.

NATO makes smooth transition in Libya operations

The transition from the U.S.-led Operation Odyssey Dawn to the NATO-led Operation Unified Protector has occurred seamlessly, British Royal Navy Rear Adm. Russell Harding said in Naples, Italy, April 6.

The NATO mission has the equipment and capabilities needed to protect the Libyan people, maintain the no-fly zone over Libya and enforce the munitions blockade of the country, Admiral Harding said.

U.S. aircraft and ships are in support of the NATO operation and American aircraft are not flying airstrikes against Moammar Gadhafi's forces.

ISAF Joint Command operational update

International Security Assistance Forces repelled an insurgent attack on an ISAF base yesterday, killing numerous insurgents and wounding another in eastern Afghanistan.

The failed attack, consisting of rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire, occurred at a forward operating base in Beshud district, Nangarhar province. Coalition forces repelled the attack with small-arms and an air weapons team. After gaining positive identification, the air weapons team engaged the enemy position, killing numerous insurgents and forcing the others to flee.

Paktika youth shura addresses Quran burning, province’s education needs

More than 300 of Paktika’s youth gathered for a shura hosted by the Ministry of Information and Culture April 4.

Paktika’s youth, representing several districts around the province, came together to learn about their government, share ideas and voice concerns.

Najia Bakerkhel, Paktika’s only female Wolesi Jirga representative, addressed the attendees. The Wolesi Jirga, also known as the House of the People, is responsible for making and ratifying laws, as well as approving the actions of the president.

Iraqi police learn to sustain life during the ‘golden hour’

Iraqi police officers from Babil and Karbala provinces completed training on first-response medical techniques, March 30, at the Iraqi Police Academy on Contingency Operating Site Kalsu.

The 239th Military Police Company, a supporting unit of the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, provided comprehensive training for the officers aimed to familiarize them with the basic skills they need to save lives.
