AFGHANISTAN: THE GRAVEYARD OF EMPIRES
Sayed Hassan Gailani and General Rahmatullah Safi were two of the Afghans Soldier of Fortune worked closely with during the 1979–1989 war against the Soviets and their allies in Afghanistan. Both had their roots in Afghanistan’s “golden age,” the years 1949–73, which saw modernization and experiments with democracy. Both saw their lives and country violently altered by the conflicts that have since then wracked Afghanistan. Both could have joined the global Afghan Diaspora and sought success in the free economies of the West. Instead, both men devoted themselves to Afghanistan.
