81 Christian Degar Montagnards Prisoners Identified in Vietnam

The Montagnard Foundation has received the following information on 81 prisoners held in Han Nam prison, Nam Ha province, northern Vietnam for being members of Christian house Churches and/or participating in human rights activities. Another 30 whose names we do not yet know are held in this prison, while hundreds more are held in various prisons across Vietnam. In order to repress Christian house Churches the communist authorities have imprisoned these Christians on trumped up charges based on national security laws. These laws (listed below) however, are merely tools of Vietnam’s police state used to repress human rights.

Article 91 (Escaping to another country) Article 257 (Resisting officials)
Human Rights Watch (HRW) commented on these laws in their latest report of March 2011 titled, “Montagnard Christians in Vietnam: A Case Study in Religious Repression” that “more than 350 Montagnards have been sentenced to long prison sentences on vaguely-defined national security charges for their involvement in public protests and unregistered house churches” HRW also stated, “at least 25 Montagnards have died in prisons, jails, or police lock-ups after beatings or illnesses sustained while in custody”.

The US Commission on International Religious Freedom reported in May 2010 that, “hundreds of Montagnard Protestants arrested after the 2001 and 2004 demonstrations for religious freedom and land rights remain in detention in the Central Highlands. The circumstances and charges leveled against them are difficult to determine, but there is enough evidence available to determine that peaceful religious leaders and adherents were arrested and remain incarcerated”.

Accordingly we submit this list of prisoners to the US State Department, the United Nations Vietnam Desk and the
European Union for assistance to pressure Vietnam to release these prisoners and cease persecuting the indigenous
Degar Montagnard people. The Montagnard Foundation also asks that Christians around the world pray for a
peaceful solution to the plight our people are currently enduring in Vietnam.
