By Harold Hutchison

At least 23 policemen were killed in Nigeria after they were attacked by members of a cult. The fighting occurred in Nassarawa state in the African country, which is located where the mostly Moslem north meets the Christian south.

According to a report by VOA News, the policemen were approaching a shrine for the Ombatse cult. The officers were heading towards the village of Alakyo to arrest the cult’s leader.

The resulting gunfight left the policemen dead. VOA reported that Nigerian media put the death toll as high as 55 for the police.
