The event was organized by the Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton Operations and Training marksmanship training branch and included the participation of 42 Marines from various units on base.

The Marines involved in the competition were from Headquarters and Support Battalion, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton; School of Infantry-West; Weapons and Field Training Battalion, Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego; 3rd Amphibious Assault Battalion, 1st Marine Division; 2nd Battalion 1st Marine Regiment; and Marksmanship Training Unit, 5th Marine Regiment. The competing Marines first attended 16 hours of classroom instruction then participated in seven days of competitive firing with both rifles and pistols. “During live fire practice and competition, the Marines were exposed to various weather conditions that included a mix of cold rain, partly cloudy skies, and sunny bright days,” said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Raymond L. Browne, range officer in charge, Camp Horno range complex. “Despite the challenges of these conditions, the Marines performed at high levels.” All competitors partook in a series of individual and team matches that emphasized proper marksmanship techniques. “The Marines are walking away with lots of knowledge to go back to their units and pass on what they've learned,” said Sgt. Chris Monsegue, Edson Range Team, MCRD San Diego. The Edson Range team took first place for the rifle team match and several other individual competitions. “We feel pretty good about the trophies received today,” said Monsegue. “We have been together as a team for almost a year and we learned how to work as one.” The next event will be the Western Division matches that are scheduled to begin March 8 and will be hosted by MCB Camp Pendleton.
