Children Treated After Gun Battle

Printer Friendly VersionPrinter Friendly VersionSend to a FriendSend to a FriendISAF forces operating in the Nawah-ye Barakzai district of Helmand province yesterday engaged a number of insurgents with small arms fire after being fired upon. The insurgents broke contact and fled the area on motorcycles. Three children were seriously injured in the firefight. ISAF forces broke contact with the insurgents, provided immediate medical attention and transported a 5 year old boy and a 6 year old girl to a nearby medical facility. The third child was cared for by its parents. Recently released data by UNAMA confirms that the total number of civilians killed last year in Afghanistan is regrettably up by 14 percent, predominately due to the insurgents and their indiscriminate use of road side bombs and other terror tactics which claimed more than 1,630 innocent lives in 2009. The UNAMA report specifically highlights a 28 percent decrease in the number of accidental deaths caused by ISAF in 2009 compared to 2008. UNAMA attributes this decrease in accidental casualties as a result of ISAF's increasing effort to protect the Afghan population rather than engaging the insurgents directly.
