AQI and ISI members pursued by Iraqi Police, 5 suspects arrested

Printer Friendly VersionPrinter Friendly VersionSend to a FriendSend to a FriendIraqi Police arrested five suspected members of al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) and the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI) terrorist organizations today during two joint security operations conducted in Diyala and Salah ad Din Provinces.   In Saytiyah, located approximately 110 km northeast of Baghdad, Iraqi Police and U.S. advisors searched for an alleged member of ISI, who is known to be directly linked to AQI. The warranted individual is suspected of facilitating attacks in Baghdad from remote locations in Diyala Province. The suspect is also wanted for acquiring vehicles used for vehicle-borne improvised explosive device attacks in the region. Iraqi Police established a cordon and searched one building during the joint security operation. During preliminary questioning and evidence found at the scene, a suspect was determined to be connected with the ISI network and arrested without incident. The warranted individual was not apprehended during the operation.  In a separate security operation, the 3rd Brigade Salah ad Din Police Unit and U.S. advisors searched for an alleged AQI and ISI associate in a rural area located approximately 82 km northwest of Baghdad. The joint security team searched one building and questioned individuals on site. Based on information gathered at the scene, Salah ad Din Police arrested four individuals suspected of engaging in terrorist activity.
